elsa kawai

i've been keeping an eye of elsa kawai's flickr but haven't really browse through her website. so i finally did, and found lots of exciting stuff that i have to feature her on my blog post today!

so she's taking awesome photos, this is one of my favourites. you can either browse through to her flickr or buy the prints on her etsy shop.

other than that, she also designs pretty jewelry.

and meet oddzballz, her handcrafted characters design.

well, not only those of the above, elsa kawai is also a visual designer. check out her old website as well here. agh... all of these amazing stuff, she's just another inspiring have-it-all lady that i wish i could be one someday... *sigh*

stina persson

beautiful works by a swedish artist, stina persson!

how did you become an artist?
i've always been drawing, so to be able to do that for a living is so lovely.

how would you describe your art?
i use watercolours and inks. i'm striving to make it beautiful, but with an edge. the edgier, grittier part isn't so appreciated in the commercial world where everyone wants pretty, so unfortunately my work is often slicker than i'd like it to be.

what's the scene for an artist in stockholm?
i can't say i've ever belonged to any art scene, but when i lived in new york just breathing was inspiring. stockholm is calmer, more orderly and, of course, more homogenic. but i work in a studio with interesting people and have two cool boys and a great husband. that's my scene...

what inspires you to whip up something?
i work commercially, i whip it up for money, guess. sounds bad, right?

what's been the most fun project you've worked on?
any project when working with my friends, something that i always hope to do more of. last year i did a job for german squint magazine which was really fun, really free and, of course, unpaid.

favourite piece of art?
i started to buy pieves of art for my husband's birthdays. a collage by tobie giddio, a pastel by meri bourgard, a sixties print by a swedish painter (considered really bad taste at the time!) and a small hanging scupture made of driftwood by yuri shimojo. these are my favourites and i get to live with them!

where to from here?
more collaborations and hopefully getting better at what i do.

yelda yilmaz

i was browsing through a lot of photography sites lately as i'm doing a little project to build a small site for a friend's portfolio. i have very limited knowledge in design, so i'll just build a very simple and neat one, nothing flashy but hopefully all will turn ok :) this would be my very first own project since i finished school... ah anyway, i like these photos by yelda yilmaz, simple and original. and yes i think that guy in the pic is pretty cool too ;p i always like the 'less is more' concept. do you have any favourite photographer?

kurt halsey frederiksen

it has been cold and cloudy and showered again all weekend *sigh* so other than attending a prewedding and a hen's night parties 2 days in a row, it has been a pretty quiet weekend (cause i didn't stay till late in both parties). i stumbled across kurt halsey frederiksen's drawings collection. the combined doodles and handwritten words are sweet and beautiful, simply thoughtful. his online store is opened for you to buy some artworks and other goodies such as mini posters, journals, postcards and furren cards.

i love melbourne ad

saturday morning and it's cold and cloudy and i'm still here lying on my bed with my laptop infront of me. i'm so lazy and i'll just blame it on the weather :) above is my current fave tv commercial for melbourne tourism. it's been on tv for quite a while and i fell in love since first time i saw it. there was an actress was walking a giant red ball of string along the way because she's afraid to get lost in melbourne. the most beautiful tv ad i've seen from such a simple and original idea. the cute background music is by an indie artist joanna newsom. hope you enjoy it.

milk and honey

milk and honey is an australian ladies fashion line launched in 2004. gill milligan, the founder and designer of this label, decided to start the clothing line because she can't find anything to wear. their collection is sweet, simple and casual. milk and honey is available in general pants stores across australia. the details coming soon for international stockist. have a nice weekend everyone!

dedicated to you all

i really love the idea that lovely dawbis started on her blog post about getting to know your blog readers better. i think this is such a brilliant idea; i have to do a similar post as i don't really have a proper introduction, nor i do know much about you all who are reading my blog. dawbis, if you are reading this post, you are more than welcome to say hi too :)

so my name is laura, but some people also call me lola - it's my high school nickname. i went to an all-girl school back then and they called me lola to differentiate myself to other lauras. i grew up in jakarta and after high school i flew to rotterdam to do a communication study which i have completed last year. i moved to sydney december last year and got my first job in a web design agency. i turned 24 last month.

i always adore design and artworks, hence i created this blog as an archive of beautiful things that make me happy. i'd love to do something more creative later on but don't know yet what exactly it is. i love travelling, movies, music, cafes and dining out. once in a while i read some novels too. i love weekends but i hate sunday nights. less is more, it's my favourite one-liner.

so what about you? feel free to leave a comment bloggy fellas if you feel like to. i have also installed meebo chatbox in my blog, so please do not hesitate to say hello when you see me online :)

josh pyke

last night i went to see josh pyke's concert with some friends. he has good music, he sings and plays guitar very well, but i think i'll have to think twice before i decide to go to a calming acoustic concert like this. don't get me wrong, not that i didn't enjoy it, but i guess this kind of concert is not very me. but anyway! i think he has a very wonderful website, i like the illustrations a lot! moreover, all of his cd covers and video clips (private education, middle of the hill, and memories and dust) are truly amazing! wonder who were behind this whole beautiful package? excellent works!

sunday morning me and sis were off to bondi beach. it was so relaxing having lunch on the beach and reading magazines. we stopped at bondi market too before heading back home.

it's monday morning and i was having a dessert for breakfast, a piece of chocolate cake and some fresh strawberries. yes, we are having a public holiday on monday, how great is that! i love public holiday (well who doesn't)! today's plan is having lunch with some of my high school friends and going to cinema. need to get ready now, hope your weekend was lovely too! see ya :)

kareena zerefos

i'm loving this local designer kareena zerefos! her portfolio includes illustration, graphic design, photography and webdesign - all in one wonderful package. i love the vintage feeling, the simple and elegant style of her art. here is a short interview with kareena:

how did you get started?
like most people do, fingerpainting and sticking macaroni to paper plates in preschool. i guess i just didn't get over it, and i continued to make pictures - drawing, painting and taking photos.

what goes through your mind when you're drawing?
when i'm drawing for client projects, i usually start thinking 'oh shit, i should be working'. i guess i forget sometimes that i'm actually working when i'm drawing, i get a strange feeling of guilt 'cause i'm having fun.

you workin a few mediums - which do you enjoy most?
yeah. i do graphic design, illustration and photography mostly. at the moment i enjoy illustration the most. i think this is because i've developed a style that is really working for me at the moment... i also don't need to use many resources; any old pencil, biro and paper will do to start, so it's inexpensive.

what are you obsessed by at the moment?
puppies! they just make me melt. they have no effect on my artistic practices though, so i suppose that's irrelevant.

peter callesen

i know that lots of people have already had posted about peter callesen but i think his paper cut artworks are just extraordinary that i feel i have to keep spreading the words about him! he was also featured on crust station and that's hot, and a while ago i also saw an article about him on idN magazine. i think he really is the real edward scissorhands!
